Social Media - Week 3

Social Media – My Story
Week 3

This is a whole new experience for me. Actually paying attention to My Linked In page, My Face book page, My Twitter account – it is a wonderful way to occupy time!! – Productive!! Who knows?Tweeting is a complete mystery – whole ranges of Tweets – on all manner of subjects – thought bubbles – leadership quotes –biblical quotes– some wise – some rubbish! – References to really interesting sources and papers –Some sites set up just seem to be devoted to just tweeting! And promoting a cause or philosophy – some "tweeters" of real substance– what actually happens to all this information – it is all stored forever! For some it is a "stream of thought bubbles" for others a mission? The real question for me is:Who am I targeting – with what and why am I doing it?Is it possible for a 63-year-old Management Consultant – Business Adviser – Company Director – to build a business following in Social media – and is it possible to build that following into something commercial – there I said it!!Who knows the answer – and what will it look like at its zenith!! It is a complete mystery – starting a journey with no clear end in sight is not a new experience – I have done it before – and it is always a mystery how things evolve! I really have no clue how this will emerge – at the moment I just have a thought – to learn about the future – I have to experiment – and live it!It sounds "foggy", but this is the only way I know how to get started. What I know is the getting started is the "hard" painful bit – when I started running (2002)– some might say "shuffling" – I can remember the very first run – not only hard – but seriously distressing! – 100metres and I had to stop! Dizziness – spots in front of eyes – breathing a struggle - this was repeated lots of times! Over 3 months – 6 months – 12 months – I just hung in there – then 3k – 6k – 10k – a half marathon – it took 18months – now 20 to 30 k each week and 21 HM's later – it was all "a lot of fun' – and an achievement! So back to the journey of social media – working out how to post my second Blog was a challenge – understanding the back end of my web site – and how to link to the other media? I know there is a way to link easily but I have not yet mastered it!There is some amazing information on Twitter that I may not have discovered – links to all manner of data and information – Michael Porter – Bill Gates – Umar Haque – Tom Peters -every politician!! – Most media outlets– it is an ocean and I can barely swim – what a fascinating experience. It really makes me wonder how the "information sharing world" will be in our grandchildren's lifetime. This is another reason I have started this journey – I have 10 grandchildren – and this is their world – how do I make sense of it in my "dotage"?With any luck at all I will still be conversing with them into my senior years!!

Social Media - Week 2

Social Media – My Story
Week 2

Well what do you know a second Blog – it seems that fronting up is the key! Social Media is still a mystery – I can see the elements – but what to do?I have web site, a LinkedIn account, A Twitter account, a Face Book Page and now a Blog – so what? What actually do I do with them and why would I bother anyway! So what is the purpose of a Blog?"Writing letters to the Universe" is my initial response and that seems pointless!Reflecting on life the world and the Universe – how is that useful?Marketing – me – my business – my ideas – somewhat self-indulgent really!Maybe I could reflect on my learning's after thirty-five years as a Management Consultant!! Again extraordinarily self-indulgent!The Blogs I have read – mostly on Harvard Blog are written by "major thought leaders" on a range of Business and Life issues!Am I a thought leader? The challenge of writing a Blog is with me! – And what am I to write about anyway! On my CEO Institute Bio. I claim competence in the following areas:Ben's industry experience extends over Consumer Goods (Pharmaceuticals and Food), Industrial Products, Manufacturing and Processing, Financial Services, Agribusiness, Biotechnology and the Fuel Industry. He has extensive experience in the following areas:• Governance in Family and Private companies• Commercialisation of Statutory systems• Public companiesIn another Forum I articulate it as:• Strategy Development (including Strategic Repositioning)• Corporate Governance• Management of change and transitions• Growth phases in Entrepreneurial BusinessIn My Twitter account (in 160 letters) I say:Husband, Father, Grandfather, Business Thought leader with interests in:• Corporate Governance• Strategy• Spirituality• Leadership• Entrepreneurship• Australian BusinessWhile the above are already "in play"  I also claim to have a breadth of vision, a capacity for long-term commitment and an understanding of the process dynamics of change in markets, businesses and communities. It is amazing really all that "knowledge" and "competence" – so why would I Blog and who would read it? – Maybe I need to keep doing what I am doing to see what happens!Currently I have twittered 43 Times and have 21 Followers –mostly on Leadership - Not exactly setting the world on fire!!I am just reading an e-book called an Introduction to Business Blogging – a Publication of Hub Spot that provides the following statistics!!➢ Nearly 40% of US companies use blogs for marketing purposes.➢ Companies that blog have 55% more web site visitors➢ B2C companies that blog get 88% more leads/month than those who don't.➢ B2B companies that blog get 67% more leads/month than those who don't.Maybe there is something to all this – the story unfolds!!

Social Media - My Story

Social Media –My Story
Social media  as a person who remembers radio programs being  entertainment – and a time without TV –the concept of Social Media is somewhat “advanced’!  “Colour TV” was a major innovation! I completed my first computer training in the early 1970's - and hated it - decided I would avoid it if I could!! Major computer installations came and went during which time I successfully sidestepped any involvement -then Personal Computers –how could I avoid them- I tried and was successful for some years - Our first PC was a Hewlett Packard (1991)– and the software - Word perfect – I imagined I would be in the Generation who slipped through ahead of this technology – somehow others (my PA) would do this work and when I became self employed – my wife would manage all the 'data input' – I can remember calling her to print out documents for me –I was incompetent! And then the time came – Sally sacked herself – never to do this work for me again – I was told to do it myself!! So ……. I found a coach!!  Who showed me how to turn it on – how to find my way around the basics – word perfect – internet (1993)– Sally and I together went to a one evening course on the Internet!! What a novelty! My interest was raised– every night for months I spent "surfing the web" – it was a serious learning experience – I actually learnt basic keyboard skills to the point of typing my own reports – (1997) –the period of time between Sally resigning and my emerging competence – we employed Drake Overload. From there in the space of a few years fax disappeared and email replaced it (1997-2000) – then something called My Space emerged – I never understood it – then Facebook – I still don’t understand why anyone would tell the world the most inane-mundane trivia! - then Blogging – what on earth was it and why would anyone write a letter to the Universe in the hope someone would read it? – after much time (2011)- finally I succumbed and established a web site – with no apparent outcome -launched a program for Entrepreneurs and very few replied – advertised only on web etc. – And then Twitter – what the hell is this? – mentioned on TV shows during the 2010 election!!– took ages to work out what it was – and why anyone would use it –  the social new media are still a mystery but I now have a Facebook account – a Linked In account and a Twitter account which combined with a Web site seem to equip me to do something!! Last week I watched a Webinar which painted a picture of all this social media – and with the deftness of a “con” person he suggested that for an investment only four hours a week I could leverage all these media and “change” the world – or increase my business or something – it sounded so easy – so here I go – my first Blog Why am I doing this – because I can? maybe I will learn something!
